Biofuels for diesel cars: Stellantis, one of the world’s leading automotive groups, recently announced a significant development: the approval of the use of biofuels in its diesel cars. This initiative allows owners of Stellantis diesel vehicles to adopt an alternative solution that promises to reduce CO2 emissions and support the green transition in the automotive sector.

Biofuel is a type of fuel produced from biologically derived feedstocks, such as vegetable oils, agricultural waste, or even animal fats. Unlike traditional fossil fuels, biofuels are renewable and often derived from waste processes, making them a more sustainable option. The use of biofuels, such as biodiesel, significantly reduces greenhouse gas emissions compared to traditional fuels.

Biofuels, the alternative to electricity

Stellantis vehicles, including commercial vehicles, are now compatible with this HVO diesel. Even those currently in circulation, with Euro 5 and Euro 6 engines and the XTL acronym, are. In addition, according to some analyses carried out by ADAC, it seems that this biodiesel, although it does not drastically reduce the amount of carbon dioxide emitted in the exhaust, is still cleaner than traditional diesel, with a reduction of between 2 and 5%.

However, if we focus on the entire production process, we can say that it reduces emissions by 90%. In particular, we highlight the absence of sulphur and the low content of aromatic compounds and pollutants.

 

The Stellantis biofuel-compatible engines are the 1.3 MultiJet, 1.6 MultiJet, 2.0 MultiJet, 2.2 MultiJet, New 2.2 MultiJet 4.0, 3.0 V6 MultiJet and 2.3 MultiJet (F1A – Fiat Ducato) units.

 

Stellantis, which includes prestigious brands such as Peugeot, Citroën, Fiat, Alfa Romeo, Jeep and Opel, is implementing a global strategy to help reduce the carbon footprint of the entire Group.

 

The approval of the use of biofuels for diesel engines is a decisive step in this direction. The company clarified that the approved biofuels have been rigorously tested to ensure uncompromising performance and reliability, allowing users to enjoy an environmentally friendly alternative without the need to modify their vehicles.

 

The adoption of biofuels brings several benefits for the environment, helping to reduce CO₂ emissions and promoting a more sustainable production chain. In addition, the use of biofuels requires minimal adaptations to existing Stellantis diesel engines, making this transition more accessible for consumers.

 

From an operational point of view, biofuels are compatible with the existing distribution network, so consumers can refuel in a similar way as with traditional fuels. This is a major advantage for all those who, despite not being able or willing to purchase an electric or hybrid vehicle, want to contribute responsibly to reducing emissions.

 

The adoption of biofuels for diesel engines is part of Stellantis’ long-term strategy to achieve net zero emissions by 2038. This vision involves the electrification of the entire vehicle range, with an increasing number of electric and hybrid models, as well as the use of alternative technologies such as renewable fuels.
