The future of mobility includes hydrogen along with electrification and Bosch sees hydrogen as the key to meeting global energy demand in a resource-efficient way, the company detailed at CES today.
Bosch said it is investing extensively in technologies along the hydrogen value chain and is actively promoting hydrogen as a pillar of future mobility.
The company’s focus is on the mobile fuel cell, which recently went into volume production in Stuttgart, Germany.
As a storage medium, Bosch sees hydrogen as facilitating the efficient use of energy from renewable sources.
“To help us meet our future global energy needs in a more resource-efficient way, we at Bosch are rethinking energy use and focusing on a two-pronged approach: electrification and hydrogen,” said Tanja Rueckert, member of the board of management of Robert Bosch GmbH. “For a low-emissions future, we are optimizing the use of traditional energy sources by driving forward electrification in mobility, commercial buildings and homes. And we are tapping into new, sustainable energy sources, with hydrogen playing a central role.”
Hydrogen is at the heart of the powertrain system for heavy vehicles Bosch is working on and it has received first orders from truck manufacturers in Europe, the U.S. and China, according to the company.
Bosch said it is working on components for a hydrogen engine, which converts fuel directly into energy without first converting it into electricity. That engine is due to be launched this year.
Bosch already supplies chips, e-axles, electric motors, battery technology and charging stations in the electromobility ecosystem.
At CES, Bosch is also introducing new products with its strategic partner Amazon Web Services. These include a connected, fully automatic espresso machine, which can be controlled from a car using a voice assistant, and a point-of-interest assistant that uses an interior vehicle camera to recognize the restaurant the driver is looking at based on eye movements. The voice assistance informs the driver in real time whether the restaurant is open and has a table available.
